Really interesting article. I admit to being continually surprised at how much it costs to own a sailboat and we do much of the work ourselves. I wish there were a lower cost of entry to get younger people on the water, but you nailed it when talking about the cost of life in today's world.
Great article. Very useful perspective. Those of us who sail know that sailing gives back something that doesn't show up in the accounting ledger. It's nice to know that the costs haven't really increased when adjusted for inflation. And there are some real bargains out there if you're willing to look.
Thanks! Yes, I was very surprised by the data. And agree with you that sailing and doing the work definitely pays off in so many ways. Appreciate the comment!
I just love this thought process. As a DIY sailor, not only does it allow me to own boats I probably shouldn’t be able to afford otherwise, but there are real benefits beyond cost savings.
You develop a much more intimate relationship with the boat. You truly learn the systems, understand how everything works, and know where all the weak links are. When things go sideways, you already know where to go and what to check because you’ve had your hands on every part of it.
It also makes you a better resource for other sailors. There’s something satisfying about being able to troubleshoot problems, help others out, and share lessons learned.
The maintenance becomes part of the adventure. You’re not just owning the boat — you’re becoming part of it.
Terrific article Tris. Great take on original supposition A little scary but when you fall in love , you just go all in …regardless 🏆🏆
Agree! I think I'd rather not know the numbers. 😅 Head in sand kind of thing
Hahaha! Yes!
Thanks Captain and thanks for the insightful book!

Thank you. Yes, so many issues facing sailing - costs, time, and interest, etc - with no single solution. Frustrating!
